It is autumn in New York City. I love how the seasons mark time. Our days, weeks and months.

I love how summer's gone, too, cos it makes me feel even further away from home and more defined. How strange and wonderful that weather and seasons can so alter your sense of place and time. Even as you stand still.

It was still summer yesterday. But today summer's gone. It's been raining since morning. The sky's overcast and there's a cold grayness blanketing the city, completely. Roof decks, backstreet alleys, broad traffic intersections and balconies all get the same misty cold treatment - suddenly color pictures everywhere turn black & white as if someone's been playing with the dials of a camera. Someone's stolen the reds, blues, greens. In their place, movements are chartered by shades of whites, blacks and in their betweens, and rising, floating warm air pouring out of roof tops, potholes and car exhaust pipes. It travels.

10 days past. I feel like I'm here now. In black & white.
